Chiappa RAK-22 and Blackdog Machine WASR22 magazine mods update

Saw your comment and email Tony, making a new post to add pictures.  Again, problem is that they won't fully seat enough to let the mag latch to come forward.

When I ordered the RAK-22, I also ordered two Blackdog Machine magazines. I was going to order more but chickened out at the last mibute concerned about them fitting.  BDM is quite clear to call if you aren't sure about a magazine, but they answer my first call and since I'm always paranoid about getting things when in stock I figured I'd take the gamble on just 2.  I've since called and told them that they don't fit out of the box but it looks like they will after some file/Dremel work.  I used the first 2 magazines as the experiment, but now I'm confident enough they can be made to work, so I ordered 5 more (plus another extractor, even though I still have a TurboThis spare too).

I have tried changing the front lug and front top of the magazine, but it had feeding issues.  So the rear lug changes seem to be the best for feeding, but you have to remove a lot of material and you will be sacrificing lug strength, which is why I tried the other way too.  So far I have not been able to get either magazine to seat without pushing the magazine latch forward, but I think I will be able to when I do a little more work.  I'm still in the testing phase and have 5 more magazines to do, so I'll keep you posted.  If anybody out there has a RAK-22 and a factory metal or plastic 10 round magazines, please try them in the RAK-22 too.

  1. The AKT-98 Mags seem close on inspection yet do not lock (but the differences are not insurmountable yet slightly daunting as its a "Sophies Choice" as after mods the AKT mags that work in both my AKT's and my WASR 22 will not any longer .

  2. I love the muzzle nut of the RAK 22 ,dislike the lack of toolkit hole in the Stock . I'm going to order 2-4 RAK 22 magazines from Chiappa or Atlantic as available ...

  3. Wonder if the BDM "Spring Loaded Firing Pin Kit " will fit as I have one spare in the Spares tool kit ? (I have them in both my AKT-98s and my WASR 22 )

  5. Since I don't have my AKT-98 and M10-22 anymore, it's an easier decision for me. I'm going to fix the BDM mags to work on the RAK-22. If I still had one of the others, I would probably be going after the RAK mag latch. I doubt the MPI-69 nor the GSG magazines would work, BDM is pretty clear their mags don't work in them. Where is this discussion at?

  6. After doing about half a dozen of the wasr 22 BDM conversions this past weekend this is the route I’m going. I found that for my rak 22 it doesn’t take removal of that much material. Just the underside of the rear lug to thin it out. I do worry about the durability of the plastic rear lug given the removal of material but for now they fit and feed just fine.

  7. I agree, that is why I tried to remove more of the reinforcement area because it looked like the rear mag lug was going to get real thin and I had some marks there from the first attempts to insert the mag. But probably the best way like you said. Glad you got them working!

  8. There are actually quite a lot of details like that to take into consideration. That is a nice point to carry up. I supply the ideas above as general inspiration however clearly there are questions like the one you deliver up the place crucial factor can be working in sincere good faith. I don?t know if finest practices have emerged around issues like that, however I'm positive that your job is clearly identified as a good game.
